Amalfi: A dramatic coastline

Amalfi is in the region of Campania, Italy.  The drive along the coastline- a narrow stretch of road meandering along the highcliffs on the left and the Tyrrhenian sea to the right at a drop of 1600 ft is a blast. The cantilevered villas and hotels jutting out of these steep cliffs is a jaw dropping sight.

Amalfi, itself, is a small fishing village tucked between the mountains and overlooking the glittering bay of Salerno. Here you can while away hours at the seafront just watching the boats come and go. In the old part of town, pavement cafes and quaint shops abound along the narrow stepped streets and a multitude of excellent restaurants specialising in seafood. The people are laid back, warm and friendly.

Sorrento, one of the towns on the Amalfi coastline, wedged between the mountains and the mediterranean is known as the land of mermaids and land of orange and lemon groves. It is famed for its sea cliffs, slopes and panoramic views of  Capri and the bay of Naples. The birthplace of Limoncello liqueur, it also offers some good diving, great sea fishing, boat cruises and appetizing restaurants.

With this picturesque setting, Amalfi Coast holidays are a pleasant, leisurely affair.
